Affogato

Affogato is an Italian Coffee – based dessert. Some cafes outside of Italy categorize it as a beverage which is a matter of continuing debate.

Affogato is served in a tall narrowing glass, allowing the fior di latte, vanilla gelato, or ice cream melt and combine with espresso into the hollowed space in the bottom of the glass. Affogati are often enjoyed as a post-meal coffee dessert combo eaten and or drunk with a spoon or straw.

In Italy, it is known as “gelato al fior di latte” which means “flower of milk” in English.

In other words, Affogato is no more than a scoop of ice cream “drowned” in espresso. The largest volume is solid.

You can also have a ‘decorated’ Affogato. Some cafés add Cantuccini or biscotti, while others add chocolate syrup. Some variations even include chantilly cream. The traditional alcoholic variation of Affagato is known as Affogato Corretto. This is prepared with grappa, an Italian grape pomace brandy. Besides that, you can also use Baileys, an Irish liqueur made with whiskey and milk, which is very easy to combine with espresso. You can also use a coffee liqueur, such as Kahlua.

How Do You Prepare An Affogato At Home?

It’s very simple to make an Affogato at home, and it doesn’t require too much equipment. you can use espresso machines, moka, Brikka, capsules, or even instant coffee. It can be any coffee as long as it is concentrated.

Place 2 small scoops of ice cream (coffee, chocolate or vanilla) in a coffee cup, then pour in a shot of espresso or 3 tablespoons strong brewed coffee. Top with shaved dark chocolate and chopped hazelnuts.

Grab some vanilla ice cream, brew some concentrated coffee, and try it for yourself.

Always remember

The espresso (or other coffee) really must be poured over the ice-cream just at the moment one intends to consume it. The two ingredients should be brought to the table in two separate vessels, so that the diner can do the pouring herself 🙂
